Your Discover Weekly: A Musician’s Critique of Ubiquitous Listening & Consumer Personalisation
Mentor: Dr. Fei Shi
How is my identity for sale? We cannot stream music without being surveyed. Surveillance is framed as necessary to provide hyper-personalized music consumption experiences. However, our personal data is more valuable to music streaming sites than we realize. I use Spotify’s Discover Weekly to explore how the appropriation of human life has come to be seen as inevitable in online environments, and critique music streaming’s role in promoting individual, limitless consumption. I integrate my own album throughout the presentation to showcase music’s paradoxical relationship to capitalism; music is inseparable from the market but simultaneously operates as a tool of resistance.
