Resolving, Replacing, Refining: shifting the narrative around students’ ideas about physics
Mentor: Dr. Marina Tourlakis
How does physics education inform our understanding of the physical world? Physics education research is an interdisciplinary field that draws on methodologies from education research within the context of physics. My Keystone focused on introductory university students’ conceptual understanding of physics principles, motivated by my belief that everyone is capable of understanding physics. In this talk, I demonstrate an instructional approach that foregrounds students’ wonderful ideas about physics, even if they don’t align immediately with formal physics. I hope to show that everyone has useful physics ideas (regardless of how you felt during high school physics class!).
