Garden Party: Ethnobotanical kinship amid the urban matrix
Mentor: Dr. Colin Bates
What are gardens? There are endless relations among humans and nature, though as ever more people live in urban spaces, houseplants have grown in popularity. Considering the colonial legacies of resource extraction, climate change, and global urbanization, I reflect on the summer I helped tend over 50 houseplants from friends and strangers alike. Of succulents and society, I compare houseplant popularity to environmental values, social identity, and my own experiences. My Keystone engages with senses of self and place, situated in a wider social ecological matrix, and examines our communal care for houseplants as living emotional and political will.
