Conflicting Canadian Identities on Multiculturalism: A Tale of Two Parties
Mentor: Dr. Doug Munroe
How do Canadian political parties use multiculturalism to create national identity? Canada was the first country to adopt multiculturalism as official policy and since then, it has been portrayed as a pillar of Canadian identity. My Keystone examines how the two governing parties, the Conservative Party of Canada and the Liberal Party of Canada, create identity through their response to Canada’s high immigration rates and diverse demographics. My investigation included a rhetorical analysis of campaign platforms, as well as quantitative and qualitative legislative analyses. The Conservatives often paint newcomers and those outside the border as a threat to a united Canada, while the Liberals portray the Conservative Party as a threat to Canada’s multicultural identity.
