Communicating Climate Change: The Role of Hope and Discussion in Secondary Education
Mentor: Dr. Kaija Belfry Munroe
How do we communicate climate change to adolescents? While environmental sciences teach an understanding of earth processes, psychology reveals the ways we come to know and respond to the phenomenon of climate change. What we learn is that there is not one standard understanding of, nor universal response to, the threat of climate change. Inclusive, empathetic communication becomes key to increasing collaborative engagement in this multiplicity of climate change meanings and responses. Understanding the position of adolescents provides insight into how hope and discussion in the communication of climate change education can support student engagement, strengthening their capacity to respond.
