Cattleya Ecolodge: Practicing Sustainable Ecotourism in Latin America
Mentor: Dr. Kimberly Dawe
How can we practice sustainable ecotourism? Here, I examine one of the fastest growing industries in the world, and how we can minimize its impacts through sustainable practices. Although economically profitable, tourism can gradually destroy the environmental resources on which the industry itself depends on. I focus my work in Latin America and dissect the three principles which make up ecotourism: culture, economy and environment. I then used these principles to design an ecolodge which practices ecotourism, located in Colombia. I demonstrate approaches to sustainable ecotourism which lessen the adverse impacts of tourism, and generate positive benefit from visitors, while also keeping our nature and communities safe.
