BC’s Curriculum Reform: Identifying Barriers to the Cultivation of Creativity
Mentor: Dr. James McKinnon
How can we cultivate creativity? In 2010, British Columbia began a comprehensive curriculum revision for K-12, which identifies creative thinking as a key learning objective that all students need for life-long learning. But, without the approval of teachers, the new curriculum cannot be thoughtfully implemented in schools. Through an analysis of BC’s new curriculum, I found that, while research supports the framework of the educational changes, the majority of teachers have expressed a number of concerns throughout the implementation process. Therefore, teachers exemplify a barrier to the cultivation of creativity in BC schools.
