ASD in the African Context
Mentor: Dr. Ian Picketts
It is predicted that by the year 2050, 40 percent of all births and roughly 50 percent of the world’s children will exist on the African continent, which raises great concern for public health. Despite the global prevalence of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and its recognition as a global public health concern, there are limited evidence-based publications on intellectual disabilities such as ASD in Sub-Saharan Africa. The aim of this podcast is to provide a systematic review of epidemiological surveys of the autism spectrum disorder in order to identify ASD knowledge gaps in this part of the world, with a specific focus on South Africa.
