Mountain Biking Hurts: Dealing with Common Chronic Injuries Through Rehabilitation

How do we optimize injury rehabilitation for athletes in extreme sport? Mountain bikers are known to have high risk for injury, both acute and chronic, for these athletes it is essential that effective rehabilitation techniques are used so they can continue riding at a high level with little time away from the sport. In this presentation three common chronic injuries experienced by mountain bikers—patellar tendinopathy, elbow tendinopathy, and rotator cuff injuries—are addressed. A comprehensive analysis of current literature is utilized to discuss the mechanisms behind these injuries and their prevalence among mountain bikers. Evidence-based rehabilitation strategies and best practices are examined, focusing on tailored approaches for each specific injury. The objective is to provide valuable insights for mountain biking enthusiasts and healthcare professionals alike, with the intention of improving recovery outcomes, promoting injury prevention, and ultimately enhancing the overall safety and enjoyment of this popular outdoor sport.
