As an undergraduate, Annie was in awe of the human brain and obtained a degree in Neurobiology from McGill University. She then turned her attention to miniscule bacterial molecules and obtained a doctoral degree in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology from the University of British Columbia. An avid SCUBA diver, during her degree she also took underwater photographs, taught invertebrate zoology at the Vancouver Aquarium Marine Science Centre, headed the Marine Biology Section of the Vancouver Natural History Society, wrote numerous marine biology articles and contributed to a book on local marine ecology.
She comes from a family of teachers but got the teaching bug from first-hand experience teaching at UBC, for which she obtained one of only 10 teaching awards among 1,500 teaching assistant. She became convinced that active learning is the best way to learn during completion of her Provincial Instructor Diploma, and then sought the best methods through over 500 hours of professional development training in adult education. She concluded that problem-based learning, using case studies, is the best pedagogical approach. She taught using cases in the Coordinated Sciences Program and in the professional Pharmacy program at UBC. At Quest, she uses a variety of case-based teaching methods in all her teaching. Her current interest are in developing innovative new teaching approaches and in assessing how effective they are at developing students' abilities. She contributes actively to peer-reviewed college science pedagogy journals.
