Last week we caught up with Christian\u00a0<\/span><\/i>Ahrenkiel<\/span><\/i>\u00a0\u201819 to see what life has been like since graduation. You\u2019ll be inspired by his work with the Lillooet Tribal Council<\/span><\/i>\u00a0and COVID-19.<\/span><\/i>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

You graduated in December. What\u2019s the first thing you did?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I took a month off and went home to Colorado<\/span>!<\/span>\u00a0Upon my return to BC, I moved up to Lillooet. There I had a friend that encouraged me to apply for a position within the Lillooet Tribal Council, as a policy analyst for the\u00a0<\/span>St’at’imc\u00a0Outreach Health Services branch.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What\u00a0<\/span><\/b>got you inter<\/span><\/b>ested in\u00a0<\/span><\/b>S<\/span><\/b>t’at’imc<\/span><\/b>\u00a0Outreach Health Services?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I had always been interested in\u00a0<\/span>conservation<\/span>, volunteer work and environmental policy. Fortunately, I had several close friends that were integral parts of the Lillooet community. They helped me get established and welcomed me to the area.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Your\u00a0<\/span><\/b>job<\/span><\/b>\u00a0sounds meaning<\/span><\/b>ful\u00a0<\/span><\/b>and<\/span><\/b>\u00a0insp<\/span><\/b>i<\/span><\/b>ring<\/span><\/b>.<\/span><\/b>\u00a0Tell us\u00a0<\/span><\/b>more!<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I help construct internal policies and procedures to address\u00a0<\/span>St’at’imc<\/span>\u00a0Outreach Health Services. This includes on-boarding new employees and establishing policies to address First Nations Health Policy, such as the current COVID-19 pandemic.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

There is a tangible sense of solidarity within the Lillooet Tribal community. Specifically, we have been extremely proactive in developing and adhering to stringent policies around COVID-19.\u00a0 We are a tight knit, supportive community who value the protection of elders and all members of society. Many were able to provide a historical context of how the community dealt with the outbreak of smallpox or other diseases to share lessons from the past.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

How did\u00a0<\/span><\/b>Q<\/span><\/b>uest prepare you<\/span><\/b>\u00a0for\u00a0<\/span><\/b>what you\u2019re doing?<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Overall, I think the method of learning at Quest helped to instill in me the confidence to approach new challenges. I gained an appreciation for self-learning and regulation. The confidence to ask questions and approach new subjects through research has allowed me to expand the scope of my new role.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
