Visualising Flight
Mentor: Andrew Hamilton
How do fluids affect vehicles? An object moving through a fluid will change the way a fluid moves, which in turn affects the object itself. This presentation explores how an aerofoil creates lift, and the sources of drag on an aerofoil. By visualising fluid flow around aerofoils with a technique known as particle image velocimetry (PIV), we can get a glimpse into these effects. PIV reveals the messy beautiful intricacies of fluid dynamics and is here used to confirm previous analyses of aerofoils in low Reynolds number flow.
