Swept Under The Rug: The Informality of Women’s Work
Mentor: Dr. Tamara Trafton
Where are women in the economy? Women are overrepresented in the informal economy, where business activities are not monitored by the government. To understand why, we need to look beyond economic explanations. In this research I study domestic work, the main source of employment for women in the informal sector in Colombia. I analyze the exploitative and abusive conditions to which domestic workers are subject through feminist and postcolonial theory. My research reveals that informality is reflective of, and further marginalizes domestic workers based on race, gender and class. I conclude that unionizing is the best response to marginalization.
