Nature as Medicine: Public Programming for the Improvement of Mental Health
Mentor: Dr. Molly Welsh
How can we improve mental health? Millions of people worldwide, including Canadians, live with mental illness. The intersection between neurobiology and public programming deserves critical thought when considering this issue. Research examining the effects of nature exposure on the human neurophysiological manifestations of stress and anxiety support that spending time in natural environments acts positively on our brains. This presentation shares the work I completed with the Regional District of Central Okanagan where I facilitated in-nature public programs for the betterment of mental health. Government programming that draws participants into green spaces could effectively improve community mental health.
