Field journaling as an education tool: place attachment and environmental ethic
Mentor: Dr. Marjorie Wonham
In a time of global environmental crisis, how do we foster connection with the more-than-human world? In this presentation, I argue that one avenue to foster connection with the natural world is field journaling. This tool, used by teachers, students, and scientists, allows for intentional study of place through observational skills such as drawing and writing, creating a space for individuals to interact with a place in a reflective manner. Knowledge that is acquired through intentional observation can lead to an environmental ethic that is essential for a thriving ecosystem with humans.
