Examining disease progression in pediatric malignancies

How can treatments be improved for pediatric cancer patients? While cure rates for childhood cancer have improved significantly over the last several decades, patients who experience refractory or relapsed disease face a much poorer prognosis. Childhood cancers are driven by mutations in driver genes that are unique to the pediatric population. Examining the genetic landscape of pediatric cancers is a crucial step towards improving therapeutic options for these patients. We examined the frequency of alterations in pediatric cancer driver genes throughout disease progression in order to obtain a more comprehensive understanding of the mechanisms responsible for driving relapse and therapy resistance.
