How do we better support women in the arts? Historically women have been extremely
suppressed in the Western art world due to the impacts of colonialism, white supremacy and the
patriarchy. In particular, women who sit at the minority intersections of race, class, and sexuality
face multiple layers of discrimination and systemic violence that place extreme barriers on their
lived experience and ability to create work that is valued. Through an intersectional feminist
approach to art history and curating, a variety of methods and ideologies can be implemented to
uplift under-represented artists. Using a critical lens on historical narratives and implementing
black feminist ideologies, we can reconstruct societal understanding of women and their artistic
impact.
