How has Colonization led to Climate Change? Critically analyzing settler colonialism and modern
approaches to addressing climate issues. As a passionate Snowboarder and outdoor
recreationalist I chose to examine the connection between resource extraction and outdoor
recreation. Living in spaces defined by outdoor recreation, I noticed that there is a rich settler
story including a history of resource extraction and “first settlement of the area.” I questioned
this narrative and examined the ways outdoor recreation culture works to continue the erasure
of Indigenous people. In most cases, smaller outdoor recreation towns have an extremely violent
and extractive history and legacy.
