South Africa currently faces a youth unemployment rate of 64%. High unemployment rates correlate with high crime, substance abuse and poverty. My presentation not only looks at the problems that exacerbate the current youth unemployment rate but more importantly investigates how one can create solutions with the communities affected. Through quantitative and qualitative primary research, I investigate how youth unemployment shatters the lives of residents of Wiliers Farm. A small informal community situated on the outskirts of Johannesburg, South Africa. With their heartfelt responses, my presentation takes look at how grassroots projects can make impactful and sustainable long-term positive effects on the community.
