A gendered history: Colonial durabilities in Rwanda and women’s identities
Mentor: Asia Matthews

The story of Rwanda in my work is centered around women’s identities and the colonial durabilities.
I trace back into the circumstances that influenced the identities of Rwandan women. Another
component of my work is creative writing in terms of poetry. I use poetry to explore answers to
issues for which I would otherwise lack appropriate language for. Poetry has afforded me with a
language to talk about the nuances of where I stand my work. I will talk about the power of
storytelling as a tool for passing knowledge to the next generation. I also view storytelling as a tool
for self advocacy.
