What is the role of emotion in aggression?

In Canada, ~30% of children and ~40% of adults experience domestic violence. Little progress had been made toward reducing family violence. Research shows that impulse control is essential in restraining violent ideation, but what about emotional regulation? This presentation outlines a novel experiment conducted at Quest University where participants completed measures of emotional self-regulation, and behaviour during conflict was recorded.  The results suggest that emotional-regulation (i.e., calming from provocation) is central to managing aggressive behaviour in an intimate setting. These findings have implications for early education, clinical, and law enforcement settings.

Quest University Canada is suspending regular academic programming following
completion of the current academic year in April 2023.
