Narwhal inhabit the very edges of our world, traveling in cracks in sea ice and aggregating in arctic coves across the northern reaches of Canada’s Baffin island. Due to increased shipping presence, there is concern these “unicorns of the sea” are at risk of harmful interactions with industrial activity. Better documenting their behavior motivated this work in an effort to understand the response these creatures have to stressors introduced in their environments. As used in this work, drones provide unprecedented access to collecting and analyzing marine biodiversity. In this presentation, I discuss the past two years of work, collecting aerial data of narwhal to help better understand their behavior, their relationship with the environment and attempt to understand the consequences of shipping activity.
