How can Canada improve health equity? British Columbia’s geography creates substantial challenges in delivering equitable healthcare to individuals living in rural and remote areas. Unequal access to care for remote, and often indigenous, populations continue to marginalize rural British Columbians and results in adverse health outcomes and the removal of health care agency and birth care in small communities. This Keystone presentation will investigate what it means for birth to have been lost to colonization and medicalization in BC’s remote communities, and how we can improve healthcare in small communities through the return to traditional midwifery practices.
