Let’s Talk About Sex: Center Pleasure and Consent in Sex Education to Prevent Sexualized Violence
Mentor: Dr. Emma Davy

How can sexualized violence be prevented? Sexualized violence is an individual experience and a cultural issue deeply embedded in social norms. Rape-culture is a root of sexualized violence that normalizes and condones non-consensual and violent sexual experiences. In this presentation, I propose a method of prevention that targets the roots of sexualized violence in youth sex education. This approach emphasizes pleasure, consent, and empowered communication, destabilizing the normalized conception that sexual interactions with an ambivalent or non-consenting partner are okay. In doing so, this approach targets prevention by teaching that pleasure and consent are essential components of all sexual interactions.
