The Impacts of Biomedical Research Bias on Female-Bodied Athletes
Mentor: Dr. Emma Davy

To what extent does science expose truth? How do research methodologies impact understandings and experiences of the female body? My Keystone explores the impacts of biomedical research bias and sociocultural forces on female-bodied athletes – who generally exist in male dominated spaces without information on their unique physiologies. Many of these physiologic differences stem from hormone fluctuations caused by the menstrual cycle and hormonal contraceptives. By examining the experiences of elite female-bodied athletes and their use of oral contraceptives, I establish the necessity of interweaving sociology, chemistry, and physiology, in the practice and study of female-bodied health.
