How can governments be used to best plan communities? This question covers political science, economics, and urban planning. My presentation covers the urban planning topic of American urban sprawl, or the building of suburbs. Most recent planning literature criticizes it as unsustainable and advocates for its eradication. However, sprawl is still necessary to make urban housing affordable. I argue that there is both a need for sprawl, and that there is a potential avenue for its longevity. While evidence of this occurring successfully is limited, this opens a new avenue of exploration for how sprawl can be preserved.
