Can we foster positive outdoor risky play? Empirical evidence supports outdoor risky play as having mental, physical and socio-emotional advantages for children’s development. However, increasing levels of fear within the Western world are causing educators and parents to intervene in, and prohibit, children’s inherently explorative play behaviours. In this podcast, I draw on Dr. Mariana Brussoni’s expertise, and the insight of two childhood educators trained in Waldorf pedagogy, to discuss the benefits of outdoor, “risky play”. I encourage educators, parents and society to critically reflect on the topic in order to best support the learning and development of future generations.
