How can we increase the selectivity of pharmaceuticals? The study of drug design and synthesis relies on an understanding of biochemistry and organic chemistry. Humans have been taking substances for medicinal effect throughout history. Modern pharmaceuticals are thoroughly researched, studied, monitored, and all enantiomers are characterized to insure maximum efficacy and safety. Nevertheless, there often exists a disconnect between the proven safety and efficacy of a pharmaceutical and the public’s perception thereof. By highlighting the drug development process, including hurdles in synthesis presented by enantiomers, a greater understanding and appreciation can be had for the drug development process.
