Picture This: How Picture Books Can Bridge a Gap in Math Education
Mentor: Dr. Asia Matthews
How can we use narrative to improve STEM education? In my Keystone presentation, I explore the disparity between the math we teach in schools and the math practiced by mathematicians. I highlight why this matters and propose a tool to help bridge this gap: picture books. Picture books can be effective teaching tools but need to be used well to make a difference in the classroom. To this end, I introduce a framework that can be used to plan lessons involving mathematical picture books; my hope is that this framework encourages math teachers to read their students a story.
