How do we create more sustainable living spaces? We find ourselves in the midst of an unprecedented housing crisis that stems from deeply systemic causes. There is a significant history of racialized urban housing bias that has led to the criminalization of houseless populations, exacerbating the effects of the housing crisis. In this presentation, I will seek to outline the issues and context associated with housing discrimination in Squamish. I trace the context that has led to discriminatory housing policy in Squamish. This plays deeply into the discussion of the North American housing crisis and those who are privileged or disadvantaged with the systems that have created it. I discuss the success and failures in Squamish’s development that have led here. This Keystone presentation suggests that local housing policy is discriminatory against the unhoused and helps to perpetuate the housing crisis.
