What is the role of data analytics in professional sports? My presentation is looking at the intersection of data analytics and hockey. Specifically, I am looking to review the current metrics of player performance that is used in the NHL. With this presentation, I am demonstrating the general benefit of utilizing data analytics, while also discussing its shortcomings of analytics. Data analytics is currently becoming a staple within the league and is relatively new due to the dynamic nature of the game. Teams and fans are using analytics to ascertain the true performance of players without the bias of confounding variables. Through the lens of individual case studies, I can fully demonstrate the efficacy of data analytics, while also demonstrating the misleading nature of the field. From my research, I determined that the current methods of data analytics in hockey are extremely dependent on the performance of the team, which may skew the numbers of a player. This presentation can be applied to data analytics and statistics in other fields, as contextual information is important for this subject.
