Reading Responsibility and Resistance: A Qualitative Study of B.C. Women
Mentor: Dr. Ahalya Satkunaratnam
| How do we construct literary canon? In my paper, I apply Derridean philosophy to Canadian-based qualitative research on reading. Backed up by critical theory, feminist methodology, cultural studies, and 12 interviews I conducted in May 2019, I argue that reading is an important site for both building responsibility to your community and for resisting oppressive structures. Our understanding of literature must move beyond basic literacy towards a more comprehensive idea of why and how we read. Then, we might begin to see reading as a truly social process, rather than one done in isolation and silence. |
