Networks of Care: Investigating How Emotions are Regulated in Homeless Shelters
Mentor: Dr. John Reid-Hresko
How Do We Show Care? Homeless shelters provide temporary relief but are unequipped to address the root causes of homelessness. I conducted 15 interviews with homeless participants in Squamish regarding their experiences in shelters. The punitive regulation of shelter spaces, in combination with resource scarcity, contributes to an emotionally toxic environment which makes positive change difficult for individuals in the shelter. Participants in this research found the interview process itself an opportunity for emotional catharsis in a way that was reported as impossible in the space of the shelter. This presentation invites a re-imagining of how we choose share support.
