Ionising Radiation Measurements and Simulations in Carbon-Ion Therapy
Mentor: Dr. Andrew Hamilton
How does radiation interact with matter? The word ‘radiation’ often invokes thoughts of fear and danger.  This often leads us to overlook its vast applications to humankind, including cancer treatment, space exploration, and electricity generation.  This Keystone presentation explores the use of radiation for cancer treatment through empirical and computational simulation methods.  In particular, I present a study on the way that radiation energy deposition profile is changed in carbon-ion therapy when metal implants are present in patients.  Incorporating an understanding of these changes in the absorbed dose and energy deposition quantities in patient treatment plans have the potential to improve the safety and effectiveness of carbon-ion therapy for cancer treatment.
