Humans and Fire: How Harnessing Fire Has Shaped the World

| What is fire? Using an interdisciplinary lens I considered the relationship humans have with fire. Studying human evolution, anthropology, history, and environmental science I was able to create a comprehensive narrative interpreting the relationship between fire and humans. I move linearly through history, beginning with our early ancestors using fire to cook resulting in Homo sapiens. I drew from our stories, myths, and religions to interpret fire’s meaning. I discuss the impact fire technologies such as gunpowder, smelting, and engines have on modern life. Finally, I considered different ways of understanding forest fires and fire management practices. Our ability to harness fire’s power is what sets us apart from other animals, we are fire creatures. |
