Garden-Based Education: Towards Sustainable Agriculture
Mentor: Dr. Marjorie Wonham
How can we promote sustainable food systems through education? Modern industrial agriculture throughout North America is environmentally, economically and socially unsustainable. In this presentation, I argue a conscious shift in consumption habits has the highest potential to produce change and education is a means to elicit that shift. My review of education and environmental psychology literature suggests that environment-specific nature connection and environmental knowledge are the two key moderators of pro-environmental attitudes and behaviours. I present a garden-based educational program for children as an effective tool to influence consumption habits and, in turn, shift our agricultural systems towards higher sustainability.
