Being Otherwise than for Me: The Ethical Subject and the Demand for its Creation

| What is moral education? I reach into the foundations of foundations to redefine personhood and responsibility by reading Levinas and Derrida together. A gap exists in ‘Levinasian’ moral education. I forward a position to fill that gap. In this presentation, I focus first on the inescapability of intersubjectivity. Second, I move to the dialectic of presence/absence and its play in the structure of ethical subjectivity. Finally, I argue that we all have the inescapable responsibility to commit to a new project of moral education. This project emphasizes sensitivity to the conditions of possibility for injustice and violence of all sorts. |
