Visualizing the Invisible: Investigating Hypoxia in Coastal Oceans
Mentor: Dr. Emma Davy
What is the chemistry of climate change? Anthropogenic climate change is causing deoxygenation of coastal and open ocean systems around the world. When conditions become hypoxic, or oxygen-depleted, all oxygen-requiring marine species are jeopardized. Despite being a major climate change symptom, hypoxia is rarely discussed outside of academic discourses. My research assesses oxygen content and oceanographic dynamics in Chatham Sound, BC, and attempts to understand our collective inattentiveness to hypoxia. I argue that the invisibility and nuance of hypoxia are responsible for its anonymity, and that increased research and innovative science communication are required to visualize the invisible.
