Looking Through A Canopy of Kelp: The Entanglement of Ecological Research, Reciprocity and Responsibility
Mentor: Dr. Colin Bates
How can ecology reciprocate? By recognizing the connection between people and place, we come to realize that social and environmental issues are inherently intertwined. In British Columbia, environmental issues and conservation initiatives are situated within the ongoing imprint of colonialism. In this Keystone, I utilize my own experience undertaking kelp monitoring to investigate the implications of conducting ecological research in unceded territory. Using an autoethnographic approach, I reflect on prominent themes in my research: entitlement, gratitude and respect. My work calls for critical self-reflection, and a simultaneous recognition of reciprocity and responsibility. It underlines the importance of asking permission.
