Atlantis Rebirth: Imagining Caribbean Histories, Identities and Futurities through Dance
Mentor: Dr. Ahalya Satkunaratnam
How can we deconstruct and critically engage with Caribbean histories and identities through dance? I attempt to answer this question by analysing a dance production, entitled Atlantis Rebirth, through the interdisciplinary lenses of Cultural Studies. In this production, the participants unpack historical events through research, re-enactment, dance improvisation and dialogue. By conducting semi-structured interviews with five participants, I explore how the production also became a safe space for the group to imagine themselves outside of colonial and capitalist narratives. Participants unpacking these themes through movement led to more meaningful conversations about who we are and where we’re going.
