Olefin Metathesis: Off the Bench!

Olefin metathesis is a Nobel Prize winning reaction (2005) that allows for the formation of carbon-carbon double bonds that are difficult (or impossible) to make by other means through the use of ruthenium-based catalysts. While there is no argument to its utility, the uptake of olefin metathesis into industry has been exceptionally slow with only ONE commercial pharmaceutical making use of this reaction. What is the hold up? What is preventing olefin methathesis from getting “off the bench”? In this presentation, Dr. Davy will cover the history of olefin metathesis as well as ongoing efforts to understand the deactivation of these catalysts and the consequence of their decomposition products.
