Elaine Ávila is the recipient of numerous awards including the DISQUIET International Short Play Award in Lisbon, the Victoria Critic Circle’s Best New Play Award, the Festival de los Cocos Audience Favorite/Best New Play Award in Panamá City, the Mellon Foundation Elemental Arts Award to Write an Environmental Play, Canada Council Millennium Grant, and the British Columbia Arts Council Project Assistance to Creative Writers. She has been distinguished as a Notáveis dos Açores (Notable Descendant) for her theatre work by the Government of the Azores, Portugal.
Her plays have been performed in London, England; New York City; Los Angeles; throughout Portugal, Central America, Canada and the U.S.….and now, Quest University Canada. Vancouver’s best professional actors will perform excerpts from Ávila’s works, directed and curated by former CBC documentary and drama producer Kathleen Flaherty. Plays will include the true story of a woman conquistador, the labour hero who achieved the eight-hour day in Canada, and a small town that stood up to Big Oil. Ávila is published in Canadian Theatre Review, American Theatre, Howlround, Café Onda, Portuguese American Journal, Women in Theatre, and Contemporary Theatre Review.
