Plants connect Indigenous People to place in a very specific and meaningful way. The phrase “our food is our medicine” speaks to the intertwined nature of culturally important plants and health.
In this talk, Squamish Nation ethnobiologist Leigh Joseph will explore the role of renewing Indigenous plant relationships, and related land-based practices, in the context of the larger Indigenous cultural and political resurgence taking place in Canada.
About Leigh Joseph
Leigh Joseph is a member of the Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish) First Nation whose ancestral name is Styawat. Leigh has completed an MSc in ethnobotany and is currently pursuing her PhD through the University of Victoria.
