The Hereford Mappa Mundi, a large world map made c.1285, is a monumental container for the monstrous and marvelous in the medieval world. More than a representation of geography, it was created as an encyclopedic teaching tool that visualizes medieval attitudes towards knowledge. In this lecture, we will investigate some of the methods we can use to understand the map’s purpose and question what was considered essential knowledge in this specific historical context.
